Totality

The earth and moon line up a lot;
The spectacle is not so hot
Until third parties intervene.
Today’s was worth having been seen.
The songbirds hushed as advertised–
Perhaps, though, they were just surprised
By barking dogs and fireworks
(Our neighbors’ pets are pyro jerks).
The stars came out to watch the show.
I’m not convinced it wowed them, though.
From their perspective, what’s to see?
Earth and moon and sun, all three
Spectacularly unoccluded
Unless from a vantage rooted
Firmly on the same long line
Like tumors on a solar spine
In which case they’d be hid from us.
My point is, it was worth the fuss
From here in western Oregon.
When’s 2024 again?
