The River Arno, 1 p.m.

Another shot of the Arno and the Church of Saint Mary of the Spine, this one taken in the early afternoon after our visit to the Plaza dei Miracoli (the Duomo and Campanile, shown below; I’m still having trouble with the sequencing on this blog). We were hurrying back to the hotel to meet the rental car representative at 1:30; as it turned out, most of Italy takes siesta between about 1:30 and 4:00 each afternoon, and we didn’t get the car until 3:30. Just as well, as it kept us from driving very far. The cars are tiny, but gas is molto caro, about $5 a gallon. (It doesn’t seem that bad, though, because the prices are posted in euros per liter.)
