Words Form The Family

Words form the family, the program read,
After a hymn, before Psalm 23.
“That might not be an accident,” I said,
Based on my background with the eulogee.
A suitor for her daughter’s hand, we’d met
When I was twenty, loathe to wear real shoes.
I’d wear a tie for fancy dates, and yet
My feet wore flip-flops. When she got the news
That we were serious, I’m sure she sighed
And pursed her lips, while asking, “Are you sure?”
Assured we were, she said, “Okay.” And I’d
Become a family member, thanks to her.
I dare not think how bare my life would be
Had not her words helped form my family.

Michael: Your words help form our family, and this is a beautiful example.
